Caveem Safety Razor: A Surprisingly Good Inexpensive Razor On Amazon

I occasionally look at Amazon’s “Best Sellers in Men’s Safety Shaving Razors” list to see what safety razors are popular on the site.  The Caveem double edge razor showed up on the list with a respectable 4.4 rating and for only US $12.99, so I picked one up to try and found it surprisingly good for the price.

Background

Amazon’s Best Sellers in Men’s Safety Shaving Razors list has a lot of well-known safety razors (Merkur, Henson, Rockwell, etc.), lower-cost but established razors (Weishi, Zomchi, Vikings Blade, etc.), and the inevitable low-cost “flash in the pan” products from sketchy Far East sources that appear then disappear after a few weeks.

But, every once in a while, there’s a low cost and decently-built safety razor that comes along and actually sticks around. I think that the Caveem Safety Razor is one of those products. It’s been bouncing around Amazon’s best safety razors list since February (it originally appeared at a US $9.99 price point but has since–unsurprisingly–gone up to a still inexpensive US $12.99).

My Experience With The Caveem Safety Razor

There are a number of thoughtful things about the Caveem Safety Razor that stand out from the bargain-basement Amazon razor crowd. Little details that I didn’t expect.

Presentation

The first “thoughtful” thing I noticed was the razor’s packaging. Rather than the plain, slightly bulky carboard box of the typical razor package, this box is a multi-color ‘slimline’ design, where the top cap and base plate are stored at an angle. The placement reduces the space needed to accommodate the parts.

The razor is lightweight at about 40 grams (~1.4 oz.) without blade. I prefer heavier razors but if you prefer a more svelte tool, this might work well for you–despite it’s weight I find it quite well-balanced. Although Caveem doesn’t say specifically, the material is obviously some kind of aluminum or aluminum alloy.

This is a three-piece double-edge safety razor. The handle is about 102 mm (about four inches), longer than many other bottom-priced safety razors. I find the lined texturing on the handle to have a nice, secure grip: I haven’t had any slippage problems with this razor.

Another “thoughtful” detail of this razor is that the top cap completely covers the blade’s side tabs. Blade exposure is symmetrical. The razor’s head is quite low-profile for getting into those tight spots like under the nose.

Over-all I find the build quality of this razor surprisingly good for its material and price.

The Shave

My shaves from the Caveem safety razor have been “boring”–in a good way. It’s a mild, drama-free shave for me–I’d give it a 4 on a 1-10 scale for aggressiveness (I prefer mild razors). I think it has a reasonable hold-angle range for a good cut. Caveem targets the razor to beginners and I think they’ve done a good job at that (despite some comments in Amazon reviews, see below). With the right technique and blade I get “BBS” results from the Caveem.

Other Reviews

Amazon customers highlight the Caveem safety razor’s durability and the cost savings over time, plus the compact, plastic-free packaging.

Some reviews on Amazon write about the initial learning curve when fitting and handling double-edged blades, with some users reporting minor nicks if the 30-degree angle and light pressure aren’t observed. Others mention occasional issues sourcing replacement blades and that the minimalist packaging offers little storage for extras.

Summing Up

The Caveem Double Edge Safety Razor is a budget-friendly option ($12.99) that stands out from typical low-cost Amazon razors. Lightweight but well-balanced, it offers a mild, irritation-free shave that’s especially good for beginners, yet capable of delivering very close results. Solid build quality, thoughtful packaging, and positive customer reviews make it a surprisingly good value.

  1. With regardes to the covered blade tabs. I’ve always wondered how dangerous they were. I use mostly vintage Gillettee razors. So un covered tabs. I have a moustache, can’t comment on cut the nose. I’ve tried to cut my earlobes, no success.
I’ve seen lots of comments, “you could cut yourself.” I seen none that were, “it happened to me.”
    Has anyone cut themselves??

    1. Early on, I did indeed nick my lobe a couple of times with an exposed blade tab, using a vintage Gillette.
I was rushing a bit and was incautious. It’s been a few years since it last happened, though.
