Wangssolid Adjustable Razor Review - An Interesting Design But Is There A Fatal Flaw?

I’m a sucker for adjustable safety razors. So when an inexpensive adjustable razor with some interesting design elements showed up on Amazon for under US $20, I decided to give it a shot.

My Review Of The Wangssolid Adjustable Safety Razor

This razor is available from Amazon for between US $17 to $21 depending on options (razor stand and different colors). It includes ten blades (of unknown origin). This razor is made of zinc alloy material, manufactured in China. The weight on my digital kitchen scale is 104 grams; the handle is 9 cm and the overall length is about 10.5 cm by my metric ruler.

This razor has some interesting design elements:

  • The razor head looks a little like the Merkur Futur, but one side of the Wangssolid razor head is attached with a hinge instead of fully “popping off” like the Futur.
  • The razor guard is solid but is augmented by a “roller” on each side to give more of an impression of a smoother shave.
  • The razor’s adjustment setting is continuously adjustable between “1” and “6.”
  • The razor’s handle is slightly barrel-shaped.

The Shave – And Fatal Flaws?

My shaves with the Wangssolid adjustable safety razor have been a study in contrasts.

Ergonomics and build quality have been frustrating. Blade installation can be a bit tricky due to the hinged pop-off head design. At first I loaded the blade on the main part of the head. But the blade shifted sometimes, even falling off the razor. I discovered that loading the blade on the hinged head cover was actually more secure because of the blade pins on that part. The blade didn’t fall off, even when I closed the cover.

Speaking of that hinge…I really wish it worked better. There is quite a bit of vertical “play” in the hinge that can misalign the head so the blade gap is not consistent. Proper clamping of the blade inside the head can take some manipulation, sometimes requiring several head openings and closings to get right. And when you open the blade-loaded head, expect the blade to unpredictably pop off.

The smooth handle has also been a challenge. (Why do razor manufacturers continue to make smooth metallic handles in this day and age?) I find it difficult to maintain a secure grip.

I find water/lather flow-through to be kind of poor with this razor. Rinsing takes a bit more work than it should.

On the other hand…once I get past the challenges the actual shaves I get with the Wanggsolid adjustable razor have been pretty good! I use my preferred blade (Parker) rather than the no-name blades included with the razor (YMMV). The adjustment range is good and the mechanism is smooth. The rollers really do seem to make the shave feel smoother.

Other Reviews?

Amazon gives the razor a 3.8 rating with a 68% positive sentiment. However, Fakespot gives the ratings their “F” score:

  • Our engine has profiled the reviewer patterns and has determined that there is high deception involved.
  • Our engine has analyzed and discovered that 12.5% of the reviews are reliable.

Comments on the shaving forums have been generally positive, with negative mentions of the smooth handle and the water flow-through, and positive mentions of the action of the rollers.

Summing Up

The Wangssolid Adjustable Safety Razor presents an intriguing design with unique features like a hinged head and roller guards, but it suffers from significant ergonomic and build-quality issues. While the razor provides a decent shave once properly set up, challenges such as blade alignment, poor water flow-through, and a slippery handle detract from its overall usability. Despite mixed Amazon reviews, with concerns about deceptive ratings, wet shaving enthusiasts on forums acknowledge its innovative elements while pointing out its flaws. At its low price point, it may be worth a try for those willing to navigate its quirks, but it’s far from a premium adjustable razor.

  1. Thanks, Mark.
At first glance, I thought the Wangssolid Adjustable Razor would be fun to try. Your review told me otherwise, especially the part about a slippery handle.
