Odd. The AOS creams are probably one of the best ones out there for preventing razor burn. . Personally, I think your razor burn issue was more a function of being a beginner. It takes time to master the DE technique, learn proper pre-shave face prep, make lather properly, etc.
It also could be that this particular blade did not work well with you. It is a process of trial and error finding the blades that work the best. And it varies person to person.

@Nector:
Did you use the sandalwood scented stuff? I have that from AOS and its like buttery smooth meringue. Almost good enough to eat and is very smooth.

The first time I shaved with safety razor (merkur here too), I had some razor burn too. Which was only a couple months ago. I used van der Hagen soap. After the first couple times the burn went way down though and is now totally nonexistent. Don't know if it makes a difference or not, but I use nivea sensitive after shave balm too and that helps to hydrate.

Great information on these videos. I need some recommendations. Today I bought a whole shaving set (including Merkur razor and blades, brush, and shaving cream set from a store called The Art of Shaving) and used them for the first time! It was a little rough getting used to the experience, but am anxious to try it again.
My question concerns the fact that I was not pleased with the cream from that store, and am thinking of returning it. It didn't seem to hydrate my skin enough, which led to some razor burn. I haven't seen all your videos, but was wondering what, if any, difference exists between shaving soap and shaving cream, and what brands you recommend. The one I got was a little pricey I think, and I remember in one of your videos you mentioned that they shouldn't be too expensive.
