The Heat is On!! How to Beat the Heat with Wet Shaving

The summer months are upon us and what better way to beat the heat then with some mentholated products.
Menthol serves several functional and sensory purposes in shaving products, primarily acting as a cooling agent that tricks your nerves into feeling cold.
Key Functions
- Cooling & Soothing: Menthol triggers cold-sensitive receptors in the skin, providing an instant refreshing sensation. This “chilling” effect can last for several minutes after your shave.
- Counter-Irritant: It acts as a mild analgesic (pain reliever) by distracting the nervous system from the irritation of the razor blade.
- Anti-Inflammatory & Antiseptic: It has natural properties that help reduce post-shave redness and swelling. Its antiseptic nature can also help prevent infections in minor nicks or scrapes.
- Skin Stimulation: As a vasodilator, menthol can improve blood flow to the skin’s surface, which may help with recovery and give the complexion a more “revitalized” look.
- Enhanced Absorption: It can slightly open up the skin, which helps other beneficial : It can slightly open up the skin, which helps other beneficial ingredients (like moisturizers or vitamins) penetrate more effectively

Feather AS-D1/D2 Still Relevant
For years the Feather AS-D1/D2 was the most expensive safety razor you could get. Created in 2010 (D1) and redesigned in 2013 (D2) this model was the height of anyone’s collection. Recently it’s been seen by some as an older wet shaving relic as some newer models have more features such as different baseplats/aggression levels. That brings up the age-old question: “Is it still relevant ?”
- Gold Standard for Mildness: It is frequently cited as a top choice for those with sensitive skin. Its design offers low blade exposure, making it extremely forgiving and less likely to cause irritation or nicks.
- Exceptional Build Quality: It is still considered a “luxury” item due to its high-grade Japanese stainless steel construction and precise tolerances. Many users treat it as a “buy it for life” tool.
- Paired Performance: Its relevance is often tied to the Feather Hi-Stainless blades. Because the razor itself is so mild, pairing it with these ultra-sharp blades creates a highly efficient yet comfortable shave that many modern razors struggle to replicate perfectly. [

The Nord Razor: A Razor Built by The Community.

With over a year of research within the online wet shaving communities, the Nord Razor is a by-product of just that. They believe:
“At the heart of Nord Razors lies a belief: routine deserves presence, and simplicity can be powerful. This razor is more than a product – it’s a quiet companion to your daily ritual.”
From the website:
“Nord Razors combines Nordic precision with patented design to deliver a shave that’s both efficient and exceptionally smooth.
Its grooved blade support enhances blade stability, rinseability, and comfort – even against the grain.
With a bold yet balanced blade gap, three baseplate options, and two handle styles, it adapts to your skin, hair, and ritual.”
There are three baseplates available, but taking a closer look you can’t help but tell the design resembles the BBS-1/Gillette Tech/Personna BBS-0. This makes sense as the razor was built off feedback from actual traditional wet shavers.

The Freyja Razor
The Freyja is CNC-machined from 304L stainless steel and designed to be a lifetime heirloom tool.
- Interchangeable Baseplates: It offers three distinct plates to customize the shave:
- Mild: Focuses on comfort and safety, ideal for sensitive skin.
- Standard: A versatile “BBS” (Baby Butt Smooth) machine for most users.
- Efficient: High-efficiency plate for coarse or long growth, while remaining surprisingly smooth.
- Handle Designs: Available in two 90mm styles, Spiral and Argyle, noted for their natural balance and secure grip.
- Unique Feature: The grooved support allows for effortless rinsing and reduces nicks by providing a protective barrier against the grain.

The Most Under Rated Wet Shaving Items
I asked AI to see what it would say with the most underrated wet shaving items:
Here are the results:
Razors:
Vintage Schick Injectors: Often cited as a better “mousetrap,” these vintage razors provide exceptionally smooth, easy-to-navigate shaves compared to many modern safety razors.
Gillette Tech (Vintage): Frequently overlooked for fancier models, a vintage Tech with a modern handle remains an elite, mild daily driver.
Soaps:
Arko Shave Sticks: At roughly $3, these are often dismissed due to their “industrial” scent, but they provide a professional-grade, slick lather that rivals soaps ten times the price.
Speick & La Toja Sticks: Classic European drugstore staples that are highly regarded for their skin-healing properties and ease of use when traveling.
Accessories:
Omega Boar Brushes: While badger hair is the “gold standard”, a well-broken-in boar brush provides a unique scrub and excellent backbone that many veterans prefer over softer synthetics.
Lilac Vegetal Aftershave: A polarizing “love it or hate it” classic that is inexpensive and provides a unique floral scent not found in modern products.
3D Printed Shaving Bowls: Often more effective at building lather than expensive ceramic bowls due to the ability to print custom internal textures.

Transcript (Machine-Generated using Transcript LOL)
You’re listening to Wet Shaving Talk, powered by Sharpologist.com, where we’re dedicated to preserving the art and skill of classic shaving. I’m your host, Joe Borelli, and today is May 11, 2026. Hey guys, welcome back to the podcast.
And boy, let me tell you, the heat is on. That’s right. If you are anywhere near the equator right now, you’re feeling the heat. And it is full-blown summer here in South Florida.
I can tell you that it is from one week to another. It went from spring to summer real quick. Highs in the mid-90s. It is back to normal for us down here.
Which brings me to our first thing I’d like to discuss, our first topic on the podcast. The heat is on, how to beat the heat with wet shaving. So there’s a couple of things that you can do, a lot of products you can buy that will help you beat the heat and give you a little bit of relief during this very, very tough time of the year for some of us and very beautiful time of the year for a lot of other places.
If it’s hot where you live or it’s going to be, you don’t want to miss that segment of the show because it’s very important that you go out there and you can find a way to beat the heat. So it’s been a few weeks since I’ve done a podcast and I apologize. Things have come up, lots of stuff going on. And I didn’t realize how busy I was till recently, till just, you know, just trying to balance everything.
You know, it’s working and family and all that good stuff. It’s a lot going on. So I do apologize on being off the schedule for a little bit on the cast, but I could tell you that… The summertime’s coming, it’s usually a slower time for me, so I’ll have some more time to be able to get some good content going, get some other stuff going on here too.
I am also in the process of trying to write another book, so I’m looking at writing another book on wet shaving. Hopefully be done with that by the end of the year, if not beginning of next year. piece by piece on that. And one thing, if you haven’t written a book or written an article or even like an essay in school or a paper in school, it does take some time and some practice.
But once you get the layout down, I’d say that’s 90% of it. Because I think the hardest part is where to put the information. The information’s there, right? You know the information.
And I used to do this with MLA format when I was in college and high school. is really the hardest part for me was getting it in the right spot. So then I would get the credit for it properly, right? I mean, I’ve had many papers I wrote when I was in high school especially.
I wrote a paper and I remember the teacher said, hey, the content is great, but I can’t give you an A on it. I got to give you like a B minus because you didn’t have it in the correct format. So I guess that’s another thing I’m going to mention today on the cast, is I’m working on the format of the cast, and this formatting it more on the show notes, basically, to where it’s a little bit easier to read, understand, and has more key note points that’ll make it so when you go through the show notes, if you can’t listen to the whole cast, or if you did and you missed something, you’ll be able to get a little bit more to it.
I’m not quite there yet with doing a transcript. I know Mark does them for the website. For for this actual cast like doing like a transcript. I’m not there yet, but I think maybe one day you know that might be more along the lines of Better right for the show notes is just doing a transcript instead of bullet points, but you guys let me know what you think So a lot has happened in
the wet shaving world in the last few weeks. We had the Maggards meet up recently, which I heard went really well. A lot of great vendors showed up. A lot of people showed up.
It was really a fun time. Again, that was one event I wanted to go to. I was unable to go to it because of work commitments. We’re going to get there, right?
Well, I’ll get there soon. Someday, I will go to the Maggard’s meetup, and I will meet a lot of you guys out there listening, because I really love going to those things, those meetups, and getting to see everybody. And also, I like to buy some stuff, too, and check out some new items, and just to see everybody all together. It’s really a lot of fun.
But we’ll see that we’ll be there soon, and hopefully, next year will be the year, you know? Also, I wanted to talk a little bit about a razor that we haven’t seen in a while, haven’t seen mentioned, and it’s the Feather ASD-1 and the ASD-2. This was the first really high-end razor, and it’s been around since 2010. The D1 came out in 2010.
The D2 came out in 2013, I believe. So it’s been around a long time. If we were talking 15, 16 years of a custom, I guess you could say custom or high-end razor, but I don’t hear too much about it. So I want to talk a little bit about that and to see if it’s still relevant.
Also today on the show, the Nord razor. This is a razor that was built by the community, right? So it was built by the wet shaving community based upon feedback from the field, basically we call it. And it came out to be a brand new razor for the people, they call it, I guess, for the community.
So we’ll talk a little bit about that and what the reviews are and how that’s built and my personal take on that razor. And then the most underrated wet shaving items. Wow. Like I’m not, so AI is out there guys.
It’s out there. It’s very relevant. I do use it for work. I do use it for things, but I haven’t really used it for the podcast.
But today I said, you know what? I’m going to ask AI a question. I’m going to say, what is the most underrated wet shaving items and see what it comes up with. You’ll be shocked at what you see.
You don’t want to miss this part of the show. So guys, without further ado, let’s get on with the show. So the heat is on. How are you going to beat the heat in the summer months with your wet shaving products?
Now, every year, I love to post something. I love to bring this up because it’s important. Because again, guys, you know where I live. I live in South Florida.
I live in a very hot part, humid part of the country to where six months out of the year, it’s Very warm, right? I guess a unbearable for a lot of people even for us here living down here It’s you know, it’s something you get used to after a few years, but it’s never quite Enjoyable at times. So I’m always looking at ways to beat the heat whether it be You know a cold drink I could tell you iced coffee Big fan I drink iced coffee every single day that helps out tremendously I also look at going to areas where it’s indoors, right? You stay inside a lot in Florida during the day.
A lot of people come here, they like to go to the beach, but that’s the worst time of the day to go. So a lot of us will stay inside and we go to the beach at night or early in the morning or later in the afternoon. And then also, we flee the heat. Sometimes we like to leave.
And if you’re going to do vacations in the summer, it’s never really in the state. We leave the state and go elsewhere to get out of the heat. But there is a way that if you do live in a hot climate, you can beat the heat right in your own shave den. And that’s using methylated products.
So menthol, it serves as a major function mostly for sensory reasons in wet shaving products. And it gives you the feeling of being cold. And it does work. And I can tell you why.
It gives you like a cooling and soothing sensation where it triggers cold sensitive receptors in the skin and provides like almost a refreshing sensation which can actually give you a chilling effect that can last for several minutes depending on the strength of the methyl. to a few hours, right? I’ve used some items, I think, by Holy Black. They have some really methylated products that I’ve gone and it’s gotten me to my commute to work, maybe an hour, where I’m still feeling kind of cool and it gives me that feeling of, ah, it’s not too hot.
It also works as kind of like an astringent, like kind of like I guess you’d say a pain reliever, like an aspirin type aspect to it, where if you have a, if you kind of get a little razor burn, a little bit of a methylated like aftershave will kind of cool that sensation and kind of take that burn away. I don’t know if it really does anything, but I know it makes you feel better. It also, it can help actually open up the skin, exfoliate a little bit, and give you enhanced absorption where it can actually make you feel a little bit better and open up the, I guess it would be to open you up, open up the pores so when you
put in the moisturizers and the skin care products or vitamins, it will let it penetrate more efficiently and make you feel a little bit better, maybe make your skin feel a little bit smoother. So there are a lot of, pros and cons to, or pros to the methylated products. Now the cons are, any one of you out here that have used this stuff and you’ve put it on your hands and you’ve wiped your eyes, you will tell me right now, yep, that’s the con. Make sure when you use it, you wash your hands thoroughly and do not touch your eyes.
It will burn your eyes. It will burn other parts of your body if you touch them, just saying it, just putting it out there. So, make sure that if you’re going to use a methylated product in aftershave or something, you use it, put it on your face and then immediately wash your hands to get it off because if you go to rub your eyes or something like that, you are going to feel a little bit of a burn and it might not be too pleasant.
I’d say also if you have very sensitive skin, I’ve seen people get burned by it, like they’ll get a little bit of a redness and blotches just by using the methylated product or if it’s too methylated, it can be a little too strong. And then also I think another con would be it can really make your eyes water if you use it. and use a lot of it. So I’ll use some of the stronger stuff and I’ll go in and I’m like, man, my eyes are watering.
I can’t even see for a few minutes because it’s so strong. It’s just so astringent. It’s like in my face. So those are the cons, but the pros are if it’s hot outside, it’s like going into a sauna and then coming out and jumping in a cold pool.
It’s really nice. It gives you that nice feeling. It’ll give you a little bit of relief on your way to work or you’re going outside to go walk or anything like that in the very hot weather. It does give you a little relief.
So I’m a fan of it. I do recommend it. It does beat the heat. And what better way to start off the summer than with this?
So if you have these items, definitely start looking into it. I know Sterling makes the Margarita in the Arctic. That’s a really good one that’s got a lot of it in there. The Holy Black does, usually their summer release has menthol in it.
I know lavender, all their creepers have a lot of menthol in it. Those have a lot and they feel really good when you put them on. I know Phoenix Arts and Accoutrements has some. Just about everybody has a methylated product.
I think Fine Accoutrements, they have one. It’s called Snake Bite or Fine Bite. And it’s got a lot in there. That’s a pretty strong one too.
But they’re really nice. Again, seasonal soap. I don’t use them in the wintertime. Only in the summer.
And I do recommend trying it out if you’re looking to beat the heat. So menthol is there. It’s here. Get yours before the summer gets too strong.
And get yourself some of the relief from the heat. So recently I was just reading around and just kind of searching the internet for just some stuff that I haven’t seen sometime. And what got my attention was I was thinking about the Feather Safety Razor and how many people used to love this razor. The AS-D1 and D2 were safety razors that came out really before the fad of wet shaving became big.
I’d say that 2010 to 2013 range is when really it started to come alive a little bit. You started seeing artisans come out with razors. You started seeing artisans come out period. You know, when I tell you guys I started wet shaving in 2010, 2011, I noticed that there was only like three vendors that I know that were artisans.
And I could tell you it was Mama Bear’s, Rudy Vey, the shaving brush maker, which is still making brushes today, Mama Bear’s still making soap, and Captain’s Choice. Those are the only, I would say, artisans out there. And nobody made razors, right? There was no razors being made, no custom razors being made by artisans, no CNC machine razors being made by artisans at that point, with the exception of the Feather AS-D1 and the D2 when it came out a few years later, which is similar, just based on feedback a
little bit. I think it’s a little milder. And this razor was, again, you can’t really consider it an artisan razor because it is made by Feather. And Feather is a larger, not a large company, but a conglomerate.
It’s a company, right? And they ship all over the world. So I wouldn’t say it’s an artisan, but these razors were made by Feather. And these were like the first high-end razor.
I remember the price on them. They were about $200, I think, or $299. Again, if you guys are listening, you’ve been around a while, you know it. And everybody’s just talking about how great this razor was and how it was like, hey, this is real high quality.
And this is basically the highest end you can get at the point. It did serve as like the height of anybody’s collection. It was a flagship. It came in a nice box.
And at that time, Feather made really good blades. They’ve always been making blades. And they also made the Persano, or personal razor, which is a plastic twist-open safety razor, which I actually still have that. And I think it’s really good.
Actually, it’s a really good head shaver. Nice and mild, works great with Feather blades, still being made today, and still really efficient. But this razor was definitely one of the better ones out there. A lot of good features on this razor, good gap, good everything, good knurling on the handle.
And I believe it’s still relevant to this day, even though a lot of people don’t talk about it. So a couple of the points that brings it up, like what made this razor so good, these razors so good, is it was actually the gold standard for mildness. for years, even to this day, people will say, hey, if you want a nice, mild, easy to shave razor that’s high quality, the Feather D2 is the way to go, ASD2. This is it, because this is a nice, mild razor.
It’s fun, and it’s good quality. If you’re looking for a high quality razor that’s not too aggressive, this is it. It’s still built really well. I mean, it’s stainless steel, and it’s built for life, right?
It’s still a really good razor. And then again, a lot of people say when you use it with a feather blade, it’s just probably the best way to do it. Mildest but yet efficient and really good razor. So when people ask, hey, is this razor still relevant?
I would definitely say yes, even with all the new ones coming out. It’s still something that’s on. Think it gets missed. I think a lot of the feather products get missed because they’re like hey There’s so many artisan razors out there wolfman razors.
No you have Black blackland razors, they’re getting they’re still really really relevant. They’ve been just celebrated I think 11 years of being making razors. I remember the first came out I have one of the first ones I actually got and I still use and it’s still really good like you don’t need to buy another one so I would say you know a lot of people look at and say hey, I want to buy a you know, a Blackland razor, above the tie razor, or I want to buy, you know, something like that instead, a Wolfman razor, instead of going and spending the money on a Feather razor, because in your back pocket, you know, in the back of your mind,
sorry, that that razor is going to be around, right? It’s been around for years. It’s still there. It’s like, hey, you know what?
I know it’s there. I’m going to try it someday. It’s on my wish list. But I’m just not going to get it now.
Same thing for me, for like McCores, McCore Razor. I don’t really purchase, use, I have a couple of them. I haven’t used them because I always know, you know, it’s there, right? I always know I can get it.
It’s readily available on Amazon. any wet shaving website, any supplier has them. And if I really want it, I can go and get it, right? I can get it sometime.
But you never know if it’s going to be gone someday or whatever. So I think the Feather stands in that. So if you haven’t tried the Feather, guys, I would recommend either trying it out or at least looking it up. And if you do have one and it’s collecting dust, grab it from the shelf, wipe it down, put a feather blade in it and give it a shot.
And just remember how the past was when this first came out. And it was really, really very big. So, that brings us to another razor that I wanted to talk about. And I really found this one to be very interesting because the Nord Razor Company, they came out with the Freesia razor.
And this razor is based upon research within the online wet shaving communities. So, this razor maker went on there, looked at feedback, got feedback from the wet shaving communities, multiple resources for about a year, maybe a little bit over that. and said, you know what, I’m going to build a razor based upon what the wet shavers want. So he built this and patented the design for it.
Now, if you look at it, it’s got a grooved blade support that enhances blades. This is just going right off the website. At the heart of Nord razors lies a belief routine deserves presence and simplicity can be powerful. This razor is more than a product.
It’s a quiet companion to your daily ritual. So they built the razor to be something that’s going to come with you everywhere you go for the rest of your life. I get it. And it’s really based upon feedback from wet shavers.
So from the website it also says that they are it’s a precision patented design deliver the shade that’s both efficient and smooth with a grooved blade support that enhances the blade stability rinse ability and comfort. It’s got a bold yet balanced blade gap with three base plate options and two handle styles. Now, my notes are, when I take a look at it, it looks just like a BBS1 slash Gillette Tech slash Persona BBS0. You’ve heard me talk about those razors.
That design is the best for a three-piece razor design. I still think that’s the best design ever. I think it’s efficient. It’s got a huge blade gap, but it’s so clean and it’s very mild, but aggressive if you know what I mean.
And looking at the head of this razor, it looks very similar to that. It just looks like it’s almost interchangeable. It looks like what he did was he took that actual head from one of those razors and just enhanced it with little grooves in it. So it’s still a solid guard, but it has almost like an open comb aspect in the middle of it.
I guess that’s to get the shaving cream to go through and filter through it. A few of the other options with this razor is it’s called the Freesia. It’s all made in CNC machined from 304 stainless steel in Sweden. Again, they have three different base plates, which you have mild, standard, and efficient.
You have two handle designs, both in 90 millimeters. You have the spiral and argyle, which has a little bit different grip. And then it’s got the groove supports that allow the rinsing and reduces nicks by providing a protective barrier. So it lets more cream go through it.
Not sure how that works. Not sure if that does work. But I’m sure, you know, they put their time into it and see that it probably keeps the blade lubricated a little bit longer without clogging it. So I’d say really awesome razor.
I think it’s a lot of work put into it and something that’s different. Price is about 300 euros to get started off with one base plate and if you want everything I think it’s 500 euros or 400 or something like that. And you can buy it directly from their website. Got to say Nord Razor company, the Freesia.
I hope that’s how it’s said, the Freesia. I think it’s how it’s pronounced. Looking forward to seeing more razors come from you guys and seeing more feedback on this one. It just recently came out, so we’ll see some more information online soon.
And definitely one to look out to pick up because it does look really cool. And again, another great design. As you know, I’m a fan of it with a little bit of an added feature as well. So good luck to you guys at Nord Razor.
And finally, the most underrated wet shaving items. So I asked AI to tell me what was the most underrated wet shaving items. That’s all I wrote, traditional wet shaving items. And what it came up with, well, kind of shocked me.
Number one with razors, the Vintage Schick Injector. Often cited as a better mousetrap, these vintage razors provide exceptionally smooth and easy to navigate shaves compared to many modern safety razors. All right. Interesting.
I never knew that that was underrated, but I can see that because I do enjoy using a Schick injector, but I don’t reach for it as often. It doesn’t have as much press as like a double-edged razor. Now, you guys are going to know this one. You’re going to know I believe in it.
You’re going to know that I did not write this. This was AI. Gillette tech, vintage Gillette techs. Often overlooked by fancier models, a vintage tech with a modern handle remains an elite mild daily driver.
I love it. You guys know that I love it and that I really enjoy using this razor on a daily basis. I think it’s one of the best designs out there. In terms of shaving soap, I looked at Arco Shave Sticks.
So at $3, these are often dismissed due to their industrial scent, but they provide a professional grade slick lather that rivals soaps 10 times the price. So that’s a number one underrated soap. And speck and latagia sticks, also classic European drugstore staples that are highly regarded for their skin healing properties with ease and use of travel. So interesting that they pick shave sticks as the actual I guess the most underrated shaving soaps out there, right?
I never thought about it. And if you think about it, you never really look for those. A lot of us would say, yeah, you know, ARCO does make a good shave soap. They do.
But I’ve never, I haven’t used one in years. So I guess, you know what? They’re right. And it’s a good price too.
In terms of accessories, the first thing that comes up is the Omega boar brush. While badger hair is a gold standard, a well-broken in boar brush provides a unique scrub and excellent backbone that many veterans prefer over softer synthetics. Lilac Vegetal Aftershave, it’s a love it or hate it scent, inexpensive, and also provides a unique floral scent that’s not found in modern products. And then it also said 3D printed shaving bowls, which are often more effective in building lather and less expensive than ceramic bowls with the ability to print custom internal textures.
So guys, I thought this was really fun to talk about AI and just to get involved and see what it says. So maybe next week I’ll do like the most overrated wet shaving products and I’ll put it in there. I’m just going to play around with it and see what it says. But really interesting to see that for the underrated wet shaving products.
And I actually agree with most of it. And I will always tell you, like the Gillette Tech, guys, that’s a great razor. If you haven’t picked one up and you only got a few bucks, You can get one for $20 or $30 in great shape online. Even if you not get one that’s beat up, doesn’t matter if it’s brassing or whatever.
It really doesn’t matter, right? It’s just, it’s honestly, it’s just, it’s just cosmetic blemishes, whatever, who cares? Pick one up and try it. They are good razors.
And of course, you know, I do agree. I think the Schick injector is also awesome. All right. Well, that kind of, that concludes the show for this week.
I can tell you guys it’s been a lot of fun. I mean, playing with AI is definitely a wave of the future and it’s fun, especially with wet shaving. Kind of wish it was there 20, 30 years ago, right? Maybe because then we could have probably kept wet shaving more mainstream than just a coming, you know, resurrecting just recently in the last 15 years or so.
So, interesting to see that. Really a lot of fun to play with it. So, if you guys get a chance, mess around with it. See what you can find.
And if you find something really interesting, send it to me. You can email it to me at any time. But that does conclude the show for this week, so I do thank you all for your patience with me and a little bit off the schedule here, but looking to get back on that. Remember, our show is powered by sharpologist.com, what your father didn’t teach you about shaving.
Special thanks to MarkMantic59 for everything that he does for the wet shaving community, and most of all, you guys, the listeners.
