Pacific Shaving Caffeinated Shaving Cream, Aftershave

By mantic59 Posted April 14, 2014

pacific shaving caffeinated
You may remember a mention on Sharpologist a few months ago about Pacific Shaving’s Indiegogo campaign to develop a caffeinated shaving cream.  Their project has come to fruition and they have just launched their cream.  I was lucky enough to get in on the first batch.

Caffeine?

My wife tells me caffeine is already a somewhat common ingredient in many women’s cosmetics (concealers, moisturizers, eye creams, etc.)  It’s a vasoconstrictor and antioxidant that helps reduce the appearance of redness and keeps skin looking and feeling healthier.  HERE is a somewhat dry, academic paper on some of the benefits of caffeine used topically.  And HERE is an article about the top 10 health benefits of caffeine.  A query on your favorite search engine will produce quite a bit of information.  Most of these benefits are not apparent immediately; it can take several weeks for the results to start becoming noticeable.

But How Is The Shave?

I’ve used the shave cream both brushless and with a brush and the results have been excellent either way.  However using a brush definitely makes a more luxurious lather.  Maybe because of the caffeine ingredient I was expecting a coffee-like scent (I must be a child of the marketing age) but it is actually a pleasantly refreshing minty scent.  There is also a small amount of menthol for a mild cooling effect as well.  It’s not quite a “face freezer” like some other shave products but it’s enough to help wake you up in the morning!

I have not seen any obvious change in complexion so far but as I mentioned earlier, none should be expected for several weeks.  I did notice a temporary, mild “tightening” of the skin though.  My wife says this is common among products with caffeine applied topically.  For me the feeling was actually kind of pleasant.

The aftershave also contains caffeine and seems to work well.  A few drops in a moistened hand applied to a moist (not dripping) face was all I needed.  Those with dryer skin would probably get more benefit from it.

I think that Pacific Shaving’s caffeinated products (Amazon affiliate link) are solid and good for a morning “wake me up” before taking that morning caffeinated coffee internally. 🙂

I finally got around to trying the shave cream. I used my Semogue 620 brush which produced a very nice lather, maybe being a bit thirstier than let’s say Nivea cream from a tube. But where Pacific fell short was in the slickness/cushion area. Overall nice convenient packaging and travel ready size, nice scent, good spearmint face feel, but lacking what I covet most in a shave soap.. Cushion, protection, slickness.

Interesting, this is very different than my experience. I’ve found that it performs very well with a brush (albeit I use a badger brush).

Don’t know if the cream just doesn’t like hard water or what, but I found the cream not protective at all. The razor blade cuts my skin as if I were shaving with nothing but water. Completely useless no matter how much cream I use (yes, I’ve even tried using more of the product). Same experience with Van der Hagen Deluxe. What is it about these cheap soaps that just don’t perform? I don’t understand why anyone would get a soap or cream that practically doesn’t work when for a few bucks more you can get something way better (Proraso, Tabac, Cella to name a few).

Thanks for your comments. Interesting, because I have hard water too but Pacific Shaving caffeine and VDH both perform pretty well for me.

I have used the new caffeinated shave products for four days now. The new cream that Pacific Shaving Co. has created is excellent. It definitely has an extra kick to it. I have experienced a nice calming effect on my face and this has lead to reduced irritation. I have only used this with a brush, but with the experience I have had thus far, I don’t see any reason to change the routine. The lather that is produced from this cream is excellent and easy to make.

Since menthol, caffeine, and capsacin are my drugs of choice I see real possibilities here for a chili pepper caffeine and menthol caffeine varieties. That is assuming I can get the caffeine into my bloodstream through my skin 🙂

Not sure how I’d feel about Capsacin laced shaving products, the accompanying eye watering may not be conducive to getting a Safe, close shave… It’d sure wake up the skin in the morning though!
