Ye Olde Barbershoppe is a rather nice combination of woodsy and spicy scents (mostly amber and bay rum, with a bit of musk according to Mama Bear’s website). Does it smell like a barber shop? Well, I guess that depends upon the barber shop. I guess the problem is that there isn’t any real agreement on what a barber shop scent should smell like, even amongst the experts. I can say it doesn’t smell a thing like Taylor of Old Bond Street’s Shaving Shop cream. Which overall I think is a good thing, I do prefer this scent. [Read more…]
I am a convert to wet shaving since September, 2010. My Dad taught me how to shave with canned foam and a DE razor. I went electric for many years and I think my beard became tougher in middle age, which instigated my return to wet shaving.
You’ve heard it before: couldn’t get a decent shave with an electric, even with new cutters; tried cartridges again, they clogged; got sticker shock at the prices of replacement cartridges, checked out DE razors and got hooked, yadda, yadda, yadda. [Read more…]
First, let me introduce myself. My name is Kenny. I am 38 years old, born and raised in the San Fernando Valley and converted to traditional wet shaving a little over a year ago. The best grooming decision I ever made. I can’t really remember what prompted me to search YouTube for shaving, but at the top of the long list of shaving videos: Mantic59.
Who was this guy? Why would he devote a whole channel to shaving?
Let’s just say I am so thankful to Mark for all the hard work he’s put into this topic.
Obsessed? Him? Never.
On New Year’s weekend, I decided enough was enough. A new year was upon us, and I wanted to start off clean. And for Pete’s sake, if the Mayans were right about 2012, I needed to be presentable when I meet my maker!
In the recent past, I scoured Yelp for a reputable barbershop in my area. I found one called Manny’s Barbershop in Van Nuys, CA. Since my experience there (for haircuts) was quite good, I decided that I would have a revisit.
There are four barbers there: Manny, two other guys and a woman on the end. The woman on the end had done a good clipper cut on my hair before. Manny and the other guys were busy, so she was the person for the job.
The haircut went fine. Nevertheless, I decided to treat myself to my VERY FIRST barbershop shave. What’s another $15, right? [Read more…]
The details of my appearance in Milwaukee have firmed up! I will be speaking at the Stag Barbershop on Saturday, November 12 from 3pm to 5pm. Stag Barbershop is located at 3064 S. Delaware Ave. There is a $20 fee to attend the event, but each person will receive a goodie bag with enough stuff to more than make up for it. There will also be a “happy hour” with food and drink. My presentation is titled “What Your Father Didn’t Teach You About Shaving” and I’ll be talking about both basic concepts and advanced techniques (with a Q&A). Jess from Stag will be discussing (and showing) the difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut. Call 414.489.7824 to reserve a spot–space is limited and seats filling are up fast. The event is sponsored by Stag, OnMilwaukee.com (check out the cool write up they did about it a couple days ago), The Brass Rooster, PBR and Old Milwaukee, Hector’s Mexican Restaurant, and Baxter of California, and with support from the Pfister Hotel.
