The Strop Shoppe – Bay Rum shaving soap

My next review is the Strop Shoppe’s Bay Rum. If you’re wondering, no it doesn’t come with the deer soap dish; that came from the fellow I bought it off of.

First off, we’ve got the great lather I expect from the Strop Shoppe. A rather wide sweet spot for acceptable water content, it easily whips up to a nice thick lather, with a high amount of glide. Just be sure not to skimp too much on the water, as looks can be somewhat deceiving when you’re first lathering up. It also left my face feeling reasonably moisturized as well.
The scent wasn’t quite as nice. Now, I like a good spicy strong bay rum. This seemed mostly vaguely spice-like, but not something that I’d really, if given a sniff, I would have identified as a bay rum scent. It also wasn’t really all that strong; while it didn’t fade much, it started off rather weak when first lathered up and applied to your face.

  • 7/10 Scent Pleasantness
  • 6/10 Scent Strength
  • 9/10 Lather Quality

A tin of Strop Shoppe’s Bay Rum shaving soap (4 oz) will set you back $10.95. It’s also available in their tallow version, and their special edition (which I’d honestly recommend going with instead).
All in all, while it’s a nice enough lathering soap, I’m not a fan of the scent. I’d pick something else from them instead (Black Tie and Baker Street are perennial favourites). 6/10 overall.
Ingredients : Stearic Acid, Glycerin, Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, Rice Bran Oil, Fragrance.
Saponifying agents : Potassium Hydroxide, Sodium Hydroxide.

  1. Hi, I was interested in who made this bowl? I know the soap is stropper shoppe. It looks like Avon. If not known, I’d like to ask Mantic. I just picked up one.
    Thanks,
    Adam
