Coates Rises From The Dead!

Listen to this article

I have on occassion lamented the demise of Coates shaving creams.  They were part of the old Simpsons (shaving brushes) business but I thought they were always treated as sort of a step-child.  Anyway, Coates tea tree shaving cream was my all-time favorite shaving cream.  A bit of an odd scent, I grant you (though not unpleasant to my nose) but its performance was incredible and it always left my face feeling great.  They had other scents too (limes, almond, rose, etc.) but tea tree was the one that “did it” for me.  The line fizzled out around 2006 and I jealously horded what little I had left for a long time.  The last bit I had finally gave out on me last year but through the kindness of another shaver who had a nearly-full pot he didn’t particularly care for (heresy!) I was able to snag a bit more.  I have been saving that pot for “special” shaves.

But Coates is returning!  According to these posts on some of the wetshaving discussion forums, The Gentlman’s Shop in the UK has bought the Coates company!  And their first returning shave cream will be tea tree!  According to TSG’s announcement they “will not seek to recreate the past, as production techniques have changed since Coates products were last produced, but look to the future,” but I’m hopeful they will remain faithful to the spirit of the Coates formulations.  You can bet I’ll be one of the first in line to try it out.

  1. That's great news! I've never tried it myself, but I hope that it turns out to be as good as the old formula. You will have to let us know.

  2. I'm a big fan of tea tree, so am very happy to hear this. I've been looking for a shaving product that has mainly tea tree for a while now, so will be right there at the head of the like with you when this comes to market.
