Fall Seasonal Special Recap
This year was the most successful year to date. I received positive feedback from the “Hall of Fame Segment” and several listeners asked if I could enhance it for next year.
Looking forward to next year!

New Blades from Oneblade
New Blades from Oneblade are now available. It’s nice to have an alternative to the Feather FHS-10 blades that are the only blades that would fit this razor (without modifications).
I’m a fan of the Oneblade and will be picking up a few packs soon.

-Don’t put blades or straight razors in carry-on luggage.
-Bring a synthetic brush
-Build a good DOP kit. Invest in a good bag.

You’re listening to wet shaving talk powered by sharpologist.com where we’re dedicated to preserving the art and skill of classic shaving I’m your host Joe Borrelli and today is November 11th 2024 Hey guys, welcome back to the podcast and happy veterans day to you all out there. Today on the show we’ve got a few subjects we haven’t been talking about. We’ve talked about a little bit in the past and we’d like to re-bring up because it is that time of the year again
Wanted to talk a little bit about the fall seasonal special recap as you know the last show we had a few weeks ago Was the fall seasonal special the largest show of the year? And I just want to go over a few things on how that show went and some feedback I got back from listeners. The 1 Blade Safety Razor, as you guys know, we’ve talked about the 1 Blade and we did briefly talk about another concept coming out for them, but they have an alternative to the feather blades that have been out. Finally they made their own blade for the razor and we’ll talk a little bit about that as well.
Traveling with your wet shaving gear for the holidays. Yes, I’ve brought this up several times, but I know that this is gonna be a huge traveling year for a lot of people out there, and it’s just natural to go over how to bring your wet shaving gear for the holidays. If you’re gonna be gone for a little bit, either a few days or a few weeks, what to bring with you and how to pack it on a plane and make sure you don’t lose your stuff. Also, when also traveling, it’s a great opportunity to try and get a hold of those family heirlooms or to ask if there are any available. So we’ll go a little bit with that and see if you have any of those similar stories. Usually we have a couple stories every year that viewers will listen to, excuse me, will send to me and we can talk about it. This is 1 of my favorites. I love these stories.
The Rocknail Sailor Adjustment Razor is out, is announced, and is up for pre-order for 2024. This is an adjustable safety razor that is 1 of the, well, I guess monumental pieces in modern wedge-tipping history. We’ll talk about that. And to briefly discuss the Year in Review episode, which will air on the 30th of December so guys without further ado. Let’s get on with the show
So the fall seasonal special of 2024 happened to be the most successful year yet with it, and I’m really proud to to be able to say that because you know we’ve been doing this for about 8 or 9 years now and every show it seems to be like I always try to improve it and come out with different ideas and
The feedback that I’ve received from some listeners from you guys out there that you guys have really enjoyed the Hall of Fame segment like the past items and Asked if I can enhance it for next year So that’s something that I thought was you know I really went with a gamble on that to try it It’s like you know I was thinking how can I make the show better? How can I want to listen to it better myself? That’s guys, really when I listen to your feedback and anytime you email me or anything like that to
tell me how the show is going, I like to think about it like, hey, how do I, if I was a listener listening to myself, what would I want to hear? And I thought about it like, you know, I’ve been a wet shaver for a while, and primarily I think the majority of our listeners are wet shavers for more than 1 year. We have a lot of new listeners, but the majority of you guys have been around for a while. What would make me want to listen to it? What would make me say, wow, I can’t
wait until this show comes out and to listen to it on my way to work. Or just when I’m hanging out on my day off or when I’m relaxing. So I thought about it and I said hey the Hall of Fame with the previous releases or something like that in that in that realm would be cool And it did work so next year. I will be enhancing the the Hall of Fame segment of that part of the cast and Possibly will be adding some more Hall of Fame I guess older releases to the show content in
general because it looks like a lot of people like those throwbacks and It’s almost hard to believe that with what modern wet shaving the way we’ve been shaving For the last 10 years now right it’s because I’ve been in the game just over 10 year well about I think probably more around around 13 or 14 years now I’ve been doing this. I think this it’s great to see some past stuff right some some throwbacks you know we’re looking at a couple of the monumental razors like the Chidari razor, the Weber razor that I’ve talked about, you
know those are like the first modern wet shaving safety razors that came out in the modern time. Those razors are actually over well over 10 years old now. So I mean, they came out 10 years now and they’re getting to be almost maybe in that vintage area. So it’s cool to go on about some, I guess what you say, throwbacks, modern throwbacks now because that’s what we’re talking about. And give some of you new listeners some insight on some of that older stuff that was monumental for wet shaving that is still available to purchase in a
lot of areas. You can still find them second hand or on eBay or if you talk to a few people they still have it or some of them are still being made. Thank you all for listening this year. I really enjoyed bringing that show to you. I enjoyed listening to the feedback and I actually listen to every podcast I do just to see if I can do better. I think we will definitely enhance the Hall of Fame segment of the podcast next year and maybe make it a little bit longer. Might even make it a two-part
series because we’re just on that threshold of being over 35 minutes, which I don’t like going over that too much. I wouldn’t mind doing a two-part episode. So, we’ll see how that will go next year but I appreciate all the feedback and I’m really happy that most that the majority of you I guess enjoyed it so thank you very much. So moving along to some news from OneBlade. Now I’ve talked about the OneBlade razor several times and you know the OneBlade razor is 1 of those modern razors that actually has I think that utilized technology and
had a new concept right it wasn’t just based on a vintage Gillette that they came out with and then redid or You know a vintage 1 blade 1 Single edge razor that they came out with that was out a hundred years ago that they redid This is like an original design that really fit in to the modern wet shaving world with a vintage touch, to say the least. Just the fact that they have come out with their own blades really 1 makes it a lot it gives me a sense of relief and 2 it’s just really
cool that they went and innovated and came out with their own blade so the 1 blade has now a single edge carbon blade, a single edge blade that is PTFE coated. So it’s got a coating on it. And it’s carbon steel which makes me very happy because I like carbon steel. I think carbon steel is the sharpest steel you can use. It’s much better than stainless steel myself. That’s my opinion. I’ve had a lot, when it comes to the straight razor gang guys, I don’t really use stainless steel razors. I kind of stay away from them
and not because they’re not good, it’s just because they’re paying the hone and they’re just not I don’t feel I feel carbon steel really held holds a stronger sharper edge. So with the OneBlade high carbon they call them the high carbon SE blades these are available these are going to be readily available for the razor and you can get them directly from the OneBlade website so when you buy them you’ll be getting this blade instead of the Feather I believe they’re called the FHS10s which are previously the only blade that could fit into the OneBlade properly
without modification And that worked in my opinion. I think those blades the feather blades are awesome I think they’re great, but it’s also like the 1 type that you can get so having some more Available means if Feather said hey, we’re not making this anymore At least we know with 1 blade blades are available. We can use those right instead if even if you love those feather blades So great to see that they came out with this I am gonna get a couple packs for myself when I use my 1 blade and I will give you
guys a little more of a formal review Or a little bit of a better review on it Now also these blades the the ones that feather made are they were meant to fit not only just a 1 blade razor But also those old some of the old single edge razors that were out there So it was 1 of the only 1 you can get and it would go into there into the some of the older razors so it’s good to see there’s some competition and that we have a razor that will shave just as well maybe
even better you know so great to see that innovation from 1 blade thank you very much guys and Good to see and a big relief for those of you out there that love those feather HS blades You now have another option just in case Feather is either out of stock or just if they figure if they decide to not make them anymore. We’re set So thank you 1 bite and the big topic of the season and this is going to happen because I Obviously traveling is up past it when we’re well past the pandemic now I
think everybody’s kind of over it. And now they’re like, traveling is up big time. Like I think last holiday season was a record, this holiday season they’re looking at traveling a lot. And when I hear those words, I say, oh, somebody’s gonna lose a straight razor or a safety razor at Customs. Or They’re gonna lose it in the check bag check or security at the airport because they’re not packing it properly So I take it upon myself to be the 1 to say hey guys This is what you have to do so you don’t lose your
stuff so traveling with your wet-shaving gear for the holidays with the holidays travel up safe to say many of us are going to be traveling and I’ve discussed traveling over the last few years but this is a really good time to go over some of the do’s and don’ts. So, my recommendations for traveling is don’t bring anything you can’t live without. Don’t bring a hairline razor. Don’t bring your most expensive razor. Don’t bring something that you truly value because there’s always a chance that you might lose it. Now if you want to bring a wolf man
razor with you or your vintage Gillette that was your grandfather’s because it means so much to you, do so but do it in a safe manner. Also, I’ll tell you what not to do with it as well. But I also recommend do not bring anything that you can’t live without because you may lose it not just in travel, but you might leave it somewhere or you might just, it just gives you another option to not have the razor. So don’t bring anything you can’t live without. Don’t put blades or straight razors in carry-on luggage. Don’t bring
that guys. Carry-ons they will check and they will confiscate your straight razor or blades. Now you can travel I believe with like cartridge razors. I’m not sure if you can travel with safety razor blades I wouldn’t try it if you get it confiscated That’s fine. You can always get more safety razor blades, but if you bring a straight razor with you You’re gonna lose that straight razor I mean, it’s Obviously not a weapon right for what shavers like us, but it can be looked upon as 1 and it’s not worth losing it That in that way
right so if you’re gonna bring a straight razor make sure you bring or blades Make sure you pack it on in Stuff that gets checked like puts a luggage that gets checked in and is not going to be with you until you get to your Destination if you are not going to bring a checked bag, right and you just want your carry-on person I love doing that too because I’m only waiting for the bag Then I would recommend just not bringing it or mailing it to wherever you’re going insured, right? So if you’re going to your
grandparents house and you live in Michigan and you’re going to Florida I would recommend mailing it on before the day you leave or the day before a couple days before mailing it to yourself at your grandparents house and then picking it up from the mail when you get it and then you can start using it. Or, a lot of guys like to bring their safety erasers with them, they’ll pack it in their carry on And that’s again, that’s a chance. I think that’s something that you should really think about before you do. And they’ll just buy
blades wherever they go. Like they’ll go to a Walgreens, they’ll go to a store, they’ll look them up, they’ll go to a Sally Beauty supply or whatever, and they’ll buy some blades. Or they’ll do the same thing, they’ll ship blades to themselves. That’s a possibility as well. Now, I personally have traveled with safety razors and strip razors before, but I do it all in check bag and I’ve never had a problem. So, just letting you know that I’ve always got my stuff back. I’ve always used it. I never brought anything really crazy, but I did bring
some stuff and I’ve gotten it through Czech luggage not never through carry-on. Another recommendation of mine is bring a synthetic brush with you. I always like to bring a synthetic brush, mainly because they dry quicker and they also are easily replaceable. They’re usually cheaper. So bring a nice synthetic brush. I have 1 that I have from West Coast Shaving that I use quite often and really when I travel it’s got a it’s not a big brush. It’s probably about 20 millimeters in diameter It’s got a nice handle on it, but it’s a it gives me a
nice shave It’s a cheaper brush about $20. It works well and again I can afford to lose it, but also when I put in my kit it dries faster than the hair and for some reason it just doesn’t leak water. Once I fling it out and I get all the water out of it I can put it right in my box and I don’t have to worry about anything else. I always like to bring a synthetic brush when I travel mainly because they are cheaper, they perform well enough and again if I lose it I
don’t have to worry about anything else. In my Dopp kit, I don’t have to worry about anything else. So I always like to bring a synthetic brush when I travel,
mainly because they’re cheaper, they perform well enough, and again, if I lose it, I don’t have to worry about it so much. It’s not gonna be the end of the world. My next recommendation is build a good Dopp kit or like a bag to where you put all your wet shaving supplies in it. Invest in a good bag. I wouldn’t get the worst bag, like the most expensive bag in the world. I like leather bags. I also have some that are like denim that work really well. Get a nice bag and just set it up because
you know sometimes when you’re away from home you kind of want that piece of home where you want something that cheers you up. I mean I like to travel but also I like to be home too. So I like to have something with me that’s kind of like, I guess with me, that’s part of me I guess. When I put my stuff to a slide I like to have my nice Dopp kit. Putting in your Dopp kit would be a razor, it would be your brush, you could put in some skin care products, whatever you use,
a small soap or a travel cream, and then whatever other stuff you do, put it all in there, whatever you need for the time that you’re there, personal items, and then you just bring it with you, put in your check bag for the most part, and you’re good to go. A lot of people bring nose hair trimmers, they’ll bring stuff like that, they’ll bring, if you’re a head shaver, you might bring a cordless trimmer, a regular trimmer, that can all fit in there. But keep it packed nicely, and then that’s like a little taste of home,
and it’s also something to look forward to I like I like having good quality travel stuff when I go. So a decent Doppette. You can get 1 for about 20 bucks really anywhere. You can go to Marshall’s, you can go to TGMAX has them, Walmart has them. I mean everybody has them. You can get 1 that that really represents you and bring it with you and have a lot of fun with it and set it up nice. There are a lot of articles out there that show you how to set up a dop kit and the
1 that I recommend is a great, just search on Google, art of mailing a dop kit and you’ll see a really cool article on that on what they’ve done over there at that website and there’s also I think he Even did a video on it or a podcast or something as well. That’s just a Google search You’ll find it and that’ll show you how to really set up a good dop kit and maybe even make another hobby for you too, right? Setting that up. So invest in a good bag and have it all set up and
ready to go and remember it’s you know, it’s for you. It’s yours for traveling. Don’t forget mention wet shaving to relatives. You never know you may get to use a family heirloom or you might get something to come home with you. If you’re traveling far away and somebody that is a relative that might be a little bit older or like your great aunt to your grandparents or something like that. Mention it. Say, hey yeah, did this or that so and so relative ever use a safety razor or say, oh I’ve been using a vintage safety razor
that I got and I really enjoy it. Usually that can start a really great conversation. And I think most of the family heirlooms that I’ve heard the stories that I’ve read about or seen or heard somebody tell me about is all based on honestly that like just going away for the holidays and saying oh yeah this is my grandfather’s safety razor my grandmother had it for years you know He’s passed on or he’s still alive. He’s like, yeah, take it. Take it home and you can enjoy it. Then you’ll have a family heirloom or at least
get to use it. I knew a friend of mine that used to go and travel and his father-in-law was really big in the wet shaving. Was a wet shaver as well. And had all of his vintage stuff. So he used to look forward to visiting him and using some of that stuff while he was there. He was like, yeah, he lets me use his vintage Gillettes, his old razors, and I’ll use it while I’m there with his old brush like it’s very cool we get to he lets me borrow it. I thought that was something really
nice to look forward to and he enjoys it and eventually you know he was given all that stuff. Now 1 thing I do want to mention as we get Time goes on right we’re in the year 2024 we got to remember that a lot of those vintage sluts and Vintage razors and vintage old spice mugs and stuff are well over 60 to 70 years old so the generational gap is going to get larger and larger like there’s going to be areas to where you might go and you’re like, example, my parents would probably be like the
last generation that were able to get a Gillette razor when they started shaving, like something like that, right? You’re looking at maybe 1 more generation after that but pretty soon it’s going to be you know If you’re born in the 80s or the 70s or 80s chances are you’re using an electric razor or or a cartridge razor at that point right? So Take it with a grain of salt. Don’t be disappointed if they don’t have anything. Also, a lot of people kind of toss that stuff. But it’s a great time to ask. And you know what?
Every year there’s a story that I always enjoy seeing where somebody was able to find something. Those are my recommendations when you travel. And remember, it’s always your personal experience that means the most to make the best of a vacation and You know always bring a little piece of wet shaving with you when you go if you’re really into it if not Nothing wrong with using a cartridge razor some can goo or cream for the week it makes it easier and you don’t have to worry about losing any or good stuff so nothing wrong with that
either and Finally guys the rock now sailor razor for 2024 is here It’s available for pre-order and there are several editions that are available that you can you can purchase ranging in price from very I guess more affordable to a little bit of well in that higher end area But this rock now sailor is it’s a limited edition razor that is released every year. It’s a collaboration between Rocknell and Barbados razors and has been released with new models and the concept came out about 2007, but I’ve seen regular communication about it since 2013. This is the
first CNC machined adjustable razor on the market and still a key player after around 17 years of production or concept or from the concept. I’m not sure if the first model came out in 07 but I do know that that collaboration or it started around that time. It started around that time. Also with this it’s a stainless steel razor that has I think about 15 parts to it’s adjustable and was again the first adjustable razor new production of dustable raisin on the market before all the other brands came out the exception of ones that were never
went away such as You know a few other models that were out there as well So you have the rock now razor that’s that’s making its debut again and every year they kind of change the design a little bit they’ll make it a little bit better. This 1 looks about the same as last year’s. Retail for this is around 300 euros to start so probably around 350-400 dollars for the basic 1. And then the titanium adjustable that’s being released is about a thousand euros. So that one’s a little bit more, I’m not too sure of the
conversion rate right now, but I can tell you it’s going to be over a thousand dollars USD. Now there are other razors that were adjustable actually that were in production when this razor came out that were adjustable by mccore But those never really stopped so and they weren’t CNC machines So that’s why that this one’s really a pioneer of the adjustable razors now. It doesn’t have like a clicking aspect of the other Adjustables like Gillette or anything like that. It’s more of like a smooth Kind of adjustment, but it is adjustable. It is very I Guess
you I guess you could say pictures don’t do this razor justice. It does look very beautiful in person. I’ve seen a few in person. I’ve never owned 1. I’d like to someday I think. But I’m not sure if this will be the year for me but I will definitely, it’s on my list of stuff to get. So, Rocknail’s coming out. This is limited edition. If you’re looking to get 1, you can order it directly from the Rocknail site or you can get it from, I think, a few local American vendors such as Bullgoose Shaving, I think,
sells it and somebody else does too. They’ll do the pre-order. There’s only a few hundred that come out and they sell out pretty much every year so if you’re interested if you need 1 I would probably do it as soon as possible. But Rocknell Razor you are you are a I guess you could say a pioneer in the adjustable razor world and we salute you and we welcome you to the 2024 year and with open arms for the new model. Alright guys that concludes the show for this week. Remember our show is powered by sharpologist.com which
your father didn’t teach you about shaving. Special thanks to you guys, the listeners, of course, and MarkMantic59 for everything that he does with the wet shaving community. Don’t forget to check out my site, ShaveStraightAndSafe.com. If you ever want to email me or contact me in any way, you can always use this email address jo.wetshavingnews.gmail.com. Don’t forget to check out my book, The Modern Guide to Straight Razor Shaving, available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and at Pasturist Pharmacy in New York City. So if you’re in the area, take a picture with my book. Even if you don’t
buy it, just take a picture, send it to me. I’d love to see some pictures and put them on the show. Actually, we’re also really proud that we are celebrating the 1 year anniversary of the book being published. So it was published on November 10th and of 2023 and it’s out there for 1 year and available at about 12 or 13 different online retailers and Brick and Mortar Pastors Pharmacy in New York City. Now Barnes & Noble will carry the book if you ask them to so if you go and ask the manager and ask them
to carry It they will carry it So if you have any trouble with that or if you do let me know I’d love to see the book in a store I have it getting carried in a couple local stores here in Palm Beach County, Florida So that should be there soon So if you’re in the area we’ll see it and I will actually I’m working on making a trip to Pasteur’s coming up here in December for it will be a very, very, very short trip. I’ll only be able to be in the store for maybe about
an hour. I am taking a trip hopefully to the city so we’ll see if at that and I will I will sign the books in there And if you’re in the area, you know, I’ll sign a book or anything if you want if you’re interested And also guys if you’re a vendor you want to be featured on the show always feel free to contact me at joe.whatchivinnews.gmail.com Next show will be on the 9th of December. Due to my work schedule guys, I will be skipping the week of Thanksgiving. As a retail manager, it is just very
tough for me to get a show going that week. And I’d rather not put a… Like stress you guys… Stress out and get a show going that’s not 100% that week. So it is pretty crazy. And so I’ll be returning the week of 12, 9. And then the final show will be the of 2024 will be 12, 30 which will be the year in review special. So I apologize for You
