Here’s Part 3 of my video on using the “Premium Shave Set.” Although the set suggests face-lathering, I think lathering in a bowl can give better feedback on the correct soap/water ratio, by observing the brush during lathering. As the soap and water mix the lather “builds” to fill the brush. A great tell-tale for that proper mix is to watch for “holes” in the brush. Once you don’t see holes, and see nice soft peaks of lather on the brush, you should have a pretty well hydrated brush, ready to apply to the face.
There’s been some buzz (and confusion) about the products on the shaving forums, particularly whether the current products will be discontinued in favor of the new line. I emailed Van Der Hagen about it and this was their reply:
van der Hagen Enterprises would like to announce the launch of a new line of upscale shave products. We have had numerous requests from our customers over the years to create a higher end line featuring a badger brush, brush stand and a mug with a fitted soap. The new line will be available on Amazon.com starting March 24th and is being added to Walgreens.com very soon (not sure of the exact date yet). We are planning to show the line to various retail chains over the next year and will keep you updated on our progress.
Our “value line” will not change and will still be sold in the current chains that carry it now. In fact, we are continuing to expand the number of stores that carry this line rapidly.
Following are the items that are included in the new Luxury Line and a brief description:
Badger Brush – 100% badger bristle in a monogrammed smooth black handle with a silver ring.
Apothecary Mug – a monogrammed black ceramic apothecary style shaving mug with a knob handle.
Shave Stand – acrylic shave stand that holds our badger brush and has a slot in which to stand a razor (razors not supplied).
Scented Shave Soap – similar to our current shave soaps in formulation except that it has a higher percentage of the “goodie package” – glycerin, shea butter, mango butter and cocoa butter. Both bars (scented/unscented) have over 10% glycerin. The bar is also 40% larger at 3.5 oz and fits perfectly in the apothecary mug. The scented bar is opaque white and has a very nice fresh-citrusy-woody note (kind of hard to describe). The fragrance is cologne quality.
Unscented Shave Soap – this bar is nearly identical to the scented bar and has the same “goodie package”. It is transparent and fragrance free.
Whether the customer is purchasing our “value” line or our Luxury line, our goal is to provide the best overall value on the market for traditional wet shave products.

So there you have it. By the way, the manufacturing facility is about a 2 hour drive from where I live. Do you think a visit with my camcorder is in order?
