This was a difficult webisode to shoot. I went through several “takes” of the actual mixing process, trying to do all three brushes at once. I eventually did it, but looking back on it I should’ve done one, cleaned up the area, and started over with another brush. It looks like a real mess by the end (blush); in fact I had a few comments on the discussion boards saying so. Building a Method Shaving “Mix” is not quite as messy as it seems on this video. I “burned through” a lot of slag at once and I didn’t realize the sink was quite so full of stuff until I got some feedback comments.
During the process I was amazed at the different mixing times the different brushes made. For “normal” traditional shaving lather its not much of a big deal, but for Method Shaving flatter brushes really did mix faster.
So what’s with all the Cubing, Activating, and Pasting anyway? You’re really building an emulsion. Its sort of like making your own mayonaise: you slowly “build” the stuff up at a steady pace; you can’t just throw everything together all at once. But after you’re done you have a product that doesn’t have all the artificial stablizers, emulsifiers, and preservatives that store-bought mayo has (and it probably tastes ten times better too). Or another way to think of it: canned shaving goo is like fast food, traditional shaving lather is like going to a nice restaurant, and creating Mix is like making an organic meal at home.
Part 3 (the shaving forms and finishing technqiues) is a week or so away….
João– Good idea! I will do a video about Injectors!
Hi mantic,
great video as usual.
I´m looking forward to part 3 of the method shaving series.
I must say, lerning by looking at your videos is far better, than reading manuals.
Even after 20 years of shaving experience I learned one or another trick.
Keep up the good work.
Hi Mantic,
First of all I would like to congratulate you for your wonderful videos. They are really helpfull and you have a great sense of humor.
I live in Portugal and I´m also a shave geek. My country is home for the great MUSGO REAL shaving products. You must do a video on “Shaving with an injector razor”, and I want to ask you if you could publish the pictures you use on your videos.
Keep up the good work.

Ape–
To the extent you can find an “exact” copy, no (then again, you can’t find an “exact” copy of, say, Truefitt * & Hill Grafton either). There are products that will give an “approximation” of the ingredients (the shave cube is similar to a Savon de Marseille soap, shave balm is similar to food-grade, organic jojoba oil, etc.) but as far as I know the products are covered by some kind of Intellectual Property rights.
I’m curious…. are the “ingredients” for method shaving lather available from any other companies? I may be overly cynical, but I’m leery of of “systems” which seem to be set up mainly to promote their own products.
Still a fascinating presentation though.
