Cremo Shave Sticks

Listen to this article

The Cremo Company, who make an excellent shave cream for the mass market, recently launched a line of shave soap sticks and they sent some for me to try.  Here are my impressions.

From the Cremo website:

“The Cremo Shave Stick is designed with Cremo’s same impossibly slick Shave Cream formula. It slides on smooth and covers hard-to-reach areas. It’s a convenient, TSA-approved way to enjoy a Barber Grade Shave. “

“We’ve taken the same legendary performance of our impossibly slick shave cream and re-engineered it to fit into a portable, functional, mess-free stick. Our convenient, solid formula glides on smooth, so it can easily be applied directly to skin. It’s thoughtfully sized to apply shave cream all over, including those hard-to-reach areas.”

Available in their Original scent, Cooling (with Menthol), Coconut Mango, and Vanilla Orchid.

All but Cooling have a similar ingredient list: Propylene Glycol, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Water (Aqua), Sodium Stearate, Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate, Glycol Distearate, Coconut Acid, Fragrance (Parfum), Sodium Isethionate, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Fruit Extract, Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit Extract, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Extract.

Cooling includes: Propylene Glycol, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Water (Aqua), Sodium Stearate, Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate, Glycol Distearate, Coconut Acid, Sodium Isethionate, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Menthol, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Extract, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Fruit Extract, Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit Extract.

My Experience With Cremo Shave Sticks

All the Cremo shave sticks have a moderately-strong sent off the puck but is milder when applied:

Many shavers describe the Original scent as sort of a pina colada smell.  I’ll go with that, even though the ingredients seem to be dominated by fruit elements.

I get peppermint/eucalyptus with the Cooling sent, without any of the fruit and citrus notes that are in the ingredient list.

The Orchid/Vanilla version is almost all orchid/floral, with perhaps just a hint of vanilla, to me.

The Coconut/Mango version is dominated by coconut to me but still has quite a noticeable mango element.

The instructions say to apply the soap directly to the skin but I’ve used the Cremo shave sticks with alternative methods too; see 4 Ways To Use A Shave Stick – With Video for more discussion on that.  Personally I think these do work best “straight up” without a brush but are “brush friendly” as well.  The performance for me was about the same as other shave sticks of similar price so I think it’s a solidly (pardon the pun) competitive product.

If you’re looking for a “face freezer” you’ll probably be a bit disappointed with the “Cooling” version:  otherwise it works as well as the other Cremo shave sticks and the peppermint and eucalyptus provide a mildly cooling sensation on the skin but doesn’t go overboard.

Conclusion

Cremo shave sticks are certainly convenient, especially for travel, and a step up from the typical mass-market goo in a pressurized can.  Unlike many other shave sticks there is a choice of scent and the “Cooling” version makes for a nice change of pace in the hotter months of the year.

  1. I would have to say Steve Riehle was spot on. Mark’s review lacked anything substantive. You can usually expect a pretty thorough review of a product and his take-away doesn’t leave any doubt whether it does what it says it will do, or not. It seems like this review didn’t want to hurt any feelings??? I’ll take it as a “meh” shaving product and move on. Semper-fi & This We’ll Defend, Mike

  2. How long does a stick last?
How does it compare to other sticks?
    What is the price range?
Where else can you buy it?

  3. I was disappointed in the review of Cremo Shave Sticks.

I learned about the various scents, and the ingredients, but learned little about how well they performed on the face, and the final post shave result.

Alas, I felt the review was somewhat shallow.

    1. Amazon at the moment but they should be appearing in brick & mortar outlets that carry other Cremo products soon.

Cremo also has “shave sheets:” a package filled with shave cream infused wipes. You remove one and shmear all over a wet face and viola: a face filled with shaving cream. Good enough for one quick (cartridge) shave. Excellent for a travel kit; especially where space and weight are at a premium.
