Cabo Diablo Tequila

Listen to this article

cabo diablo tequilaI drink coffee pretty much every day. I love it, but only black. Add any flavor to it and I’m not interested.
I certainly don’t drink tequila every day, but I do enjoy it, and only straight.
So I found myself conflicted when Cabo Wabo sent over a bottle of its new Cabo Diablo coffee-tequila mashup. Honestly, mixing roasted coffee, vanilla and chocolate with blue agave tequila didn’t sound good.
I was wrong. Very wrong.
When chilled in the freezer (you know it’s ready when the label reveals a surprise), this stuff is great. We tasted it in the office and everyone agreed it was delicious.
It starts out sweet like flavored coffee but morphs into the peppery bite of tequila. It goes down extremely smoothly as a shot, but with 35 percent ABV, fortunately it’s not nearly as strong as straight tequila. I say fortunately because good luck just having one chilled shot. Coffee and tequila are two great tastes that taste great together.
At $23 for a bottle, Cabo Wabo founder Sammy Hagar is really on to something. But Cabo Diablo is only available in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Wisconsin. So if you don’t live in one of these states, you’ll just have to mix your own coffee and tequila.
On second thought, don’t try that. Leave it to the experts.

  1. I foresee a trip across the border next month when I’m in Minneapolis into Wi so I can get my hands on a bottle of this!

  2. Just a minor note but Sammy sold his remaining 20% in 2010 however he still owns the Cabo Wabo Cantinas. So it’s very unlikely Sammy had anything to do with this. Also, since the buyout, connoisseurs of the brand say the product is distilled at a different location, which has negatively affected the quality vs the original Cabo when Sammy owned a 100%.
I’m no tequila connoisseur either however, I’m interested enough to want to try a shot or two. Thanks for the writeup.
