Listen to this article

[Updated January 2020] As you stare at the mirror in your bathroom, your stomach plummets. You know if you reach up to the crown of your head, hair is not something you will feel. You see the hairline starting to fade away – never to be seen again. You know that it may just be time to bite the bullet and shave it all off. But you just can’t bring yourself to do it.

Should you jump the fence of denial and get it over and done with?

No man ever looks forward to the day where they shave off all their hair. I know it is a hard decision to make. Admitting defeat may not be something you enjoy doing. I completely understand, which is why I have come up with a few great tips. As well as a way to determine if it is time to bite the bullet, and shave it all off.
If this article helps you prepare to take the plunge, here is everything you will need to shave your head:

  • Mind-refreshing endless hot water to prep your scalp for the shaving.
  • Keep the mess at bay with a little bucket or plastic bag for your hair.
  • A good pre-lather soap to help you get rid of the dead cells on your head.
  • Pre-shave oil/cream to help ensure the razor glides over your skin.
  • Lather up with some moisturizer after to leave your scalp feeling smooth, and comfortable.
  • 2 mirrors to see what you are doing. To avoid any embarrassing pieces of fluff, getting a friend in to help may be an excellent idea.
  • Don’t forget to take the before and after shot!

Deciding Whether To Accept Or Reject The Fact That You May Soon Be Bald

You have an important decision to make. Are you going to accept the balding process? Or do you want to fight it with everything you have?
If you cannot stand the idea of a silky-smooth skull, take a breath. You may be able to save your hair before it’s too late. If you catch the balding process early enough, there are hair treatment remedies that you can choose.

Various hair treatment remedies can be a tad expensive. Which is why it is important to be decisive. If you are ready to become the next Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, or Michael Jordan, great! If you want to save your hair and restore it to its former glory, even better.

Hair Treatment Remedies

Propecia and minoxidil are clinically approved products that can help with the treatment of hair loss. Propecia showed a 9/10 visible improvement in hair growth over a 5-year study. If you are able to start the treatment soon enough, 48% of the men in the study showed signs of actually stopping hair loss. Whereas the other 42% had increased hair count – say goodbye to your fears of being hairless!

You could also choose to go for advanced hair treatment therapy. Just make sure your treatment is FDA approved treatment.

Otherwise, if you are confident you can handle the change, there is absolutely nothing wrong with taking the leap of faith. It may be tough to get used to in the beginning. But you would be surprised at how much better you feel moving forward.

So How Do You Tell When It Is Time To Embrace Change And Shave It Off?

“The only way to make sense out of change it to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance” – Alan Watts.

Now it’s time to bolster up your confidence. Ready to find out if it is too late for surgery? Ready to take the plunge and embrace the new you?
The good news is that I can help with this with a nifty tool known as the Norwood Scale.

This is basically a visual representation of the different stages during a balding process. You can use this to determine if it is time for you to take the plunge and shave your head. The scale is pretty straightforward:

  • Section I + II – your good! Your hair is still looking on point, and you don’t have to stress.
  • Section II-A + III okay, no need to stress. Let’s just comb it over a bit to make it look better.
  • Section III Vertex + III A + IV Uh oh! Houston, I need some hair remedies asap!
  • Anything lower than that – Well, it’s official. I need to help you embrace the change!

There Are Actually Benefits To Shaving Off Your Hair!

This may seem completely absurd, but there are some serious benefits both mentally, and physically to going bald. Crazy how science works, right?

Being Bald Can Reduce The Risk Of Cancer

Cancer is a huge medical problem in society. It is scary. We all know at least one person even if indirectly that has been inflicted by this. The crazy thing is, studies have shown that being bald can lead up to a 45-percent reduced risk of prostate cancer.

The studies revealed that this is due to the long-term exposure of testosterone, which is one of the main factors causing male baldness. This testosterone slows down the development of tumors in the body.

Bring Back Your Summer Body – No Wonder Girls Love The Hairless

So, I know that being bald means you have had some pretty crazy testosterone levels in the past. But did you know that higher levels of testosterone have an impact on your metabolism?

That’s right. The long-term testosterone levels in your body will drastically increase your metabolism process. Meaning your body will get in shape quicker, and muscles will develop more efficiently! As I said, hello Summer body.

Let’s Face It – Being Bald Saves You SO MUCH Money

We spend thousands upon thousands of dollars throughout our lives, even if our hair is the least of our problems. Think about all the shampoo, all the conditioner. Let’s not even get started on the crazy high prices hairdressers are charging nowadays.

Although, it is impossible to get an exact amount, the average consumer can spend anywhere between $200-$5000 per year just at the salon. Crazy, right?

Poof. With one simple change, all of this is gone. Now you have more time to enjoy life. More money to go out and have fun. And best of all – less stress to deal with on a daily basis.

Just Because You’re Going Bald – It Does Not Mean You Can’t Have Epic Facial Hair

It may be incredibly difficult to get used to the idea of being bald in the beginning. But there is one perk, you can finally grow some awesome facial hair, that will leave you looking (and feeling) more confident than ever. In fact, the seemingly dominant appearance of great facial hair has led people to pay thousands of dollars – all for a simple beard transplant.

Step One – Prepare Your Scalp For The Process

So, you have committed. Now, it’s time to take your “before” shot and get ready to take the first step!

No one enjoys a rough shave, we all know the pain of small cuts. Which is why in order to make the process of shaving smooth, and comfortable, preparation is key.

The first thing you should do is take a pair of clippers to trim your longer hair down. The good news is you don’t have to worry about it looking patchy. The entire reason behind doing this is making the actual shaving process far easier.

Step Two: Shorten Your Hair As Much As Possible

The trimmer is an excellent start to trim your down, but in order for a smooth shave, you really need to shorten your hair as much as possible. Which is why I recommend finding a quality trimmer designed specifically to stubble up.

Once your head is feeling breezy with the new trim, jump into a nice hot shower. This will help moisturize your skin. The main reason you should soak it up before shaving is to make your hair soft. Making it easier for the shaver to shred the remaining hair with ease.

Step Three– Preparing The Shaving Area (This Can Be Done Before You Shower If You Prefer)

Shaving is a messy process that no one enjoys cleaning up. The good thing is you can prepare to keep the mess away. Have the countertop ready with everything you need, grab a fresh towel and a mirror ready to see any stubble that may be lurking in the corners by your ears!
Keeping a plastic bag or small bin nearby for all the hair is a great idea.

You may have made a mess when trimming your hair down with the clippers. At this point, your nerves may be shot. So, take the time to clean up any mess that may already be on the counter.

Step Four: Moisturize To Make Shaving As Easy As Pudding

If you have ever grown a beard, you may be familiar with that stabbing pain if you try to shave without shaving cream. Certain parts of your head can also feel this way. That is why it is important to take the time to coat your head with shaving-cream, foam, or gel.

If this is your first-time, I recommend getting something translucent. This will make it easier to see what you are doing. While helping the razor glide smoothly for a comfortable shave.

If you are really worried about cutting or slipping up with the razor. It’s okay. It’s actually perfectly normal. That is why I also recommend applying pre-shave oil before you lather up with your shaving cream of choice.

Step Five: Take The Leap Of Faith And Get Shaving

You may be tempted to get the job done as quickly as possible. After all, it’s not exactly something you want to be doing, right? But the most important thing to do is take your time.

I recommend going through the shave systematically, taking care of one area at a time. This will help make sure you get all those nasty little tufts of hair that just don’t want to come loose.

If you do need to see what you are doing, this is where that hand-held mirror will come in useful. You can hold it at the back of your head and watch what you are doing through the mirror in front of you. Otherwise, you can also get your friend to help guide you through the process.
After all, a helping hand is always appreciated.

While shaving, do your best to shave against the grain of your hair. Basically, the same way you would shave your beard. This will help prevent smaller cuts and the ultimate curse of shaving – ingrown hairs. If you are struggling to get particular pieces of hair, use your fingers to pull your skin taught.

Finally, I recommend tackling the area around your ears from different angles. This particular section of the head is known to be rather troublesome when it comes to shaving it off.

3 Great Alternatives To Shaving To Make The Process Easier!

For those going through balding, the idea of shaving with a razor may be just too much. It makes sense, shaving can be a huge pain. Probably why its procrastinated so much! If you can’t stand the idea of lifting a razor to your head, there are alternatives.

Epilators, for example, are amazing at completely removing hair from your head. These machines are almost like advanced tweezers. They can cost anywhere between $30 – $200, making them slightly more expensive then your normal razor kit.

Electrolysis is one of the few hair removal remedies that doctors say is permanent. Which is perfect if you are balding. No more careful maneuvering of a razor blade! The only downfall of doing it this way is you will need to go through a few sessions for the treatment.

I left this one to last, because as guys – we tend to hate waxing! But waxing is a great way to make sure you get even the most difficult pieces of hair removed. Leaving you with a silky-smooth skull.

Step Six: Treat Any Cuts You May Have Suffered Along The Way

Even the self-proclaimed veterans of shaving get the occasional nicks while shaving now and then.

When you do cut yourself, one would swear you have chopped off a vital limb with the amount of blood that starts pouring out. Don’t panic, to help stem the flood, and reduce the annoyance of small nicks and cuts, I recommend using either an alum block or apply damp cotton to clot up the cut.

Step Seven: Apply Some After Shave And Enjoy The New You!

Finally, you have finished shaving. It may feel strange when you run your hand over your head and feel smooth, silky skin. Don’t worry – you will get used to it over time.

To reduce the post-shave irritations, I want you to take some after-shave balm. This will help reduce the heat on sensitive skin and leave your head feeling cool and refreshing.

Now, call your friend in – grab that post-shave after shot – and most importantly of all, enjoy the new you!
