What Is The Best DE Razor?

3 razors

[UPDATED April, 2015!]

“What is the best double edge safety razor?”

I get the question all the time.  Unfortunately there’s no easy answer.  Unlike razors with multi-blade, pivoted cartridges that come from a few large multi-national companies and manufactured to a very narrow set of specifications, double-edge (DE) razors (and blades) have a wide variety of options to choose from.  Lets look at some of the variables and see what stands out.  These are not the only products of course–I’m listing the most popular razors that many people say may be “best” in a particular category–so if you know of a good DE razor not listed here be sure to mention it in a comment!  All the prices here are in U.S. dollars and approximate.  This post last updated 3 September 2014.

These “endorsements” are my own opinion and I was not paid by any vendor or manufacturer for these recommendations.

Shades Of "Mad Men" – P&G Begins "Review" Of Gillette Advertising

The advertising world is aflutter over the news of Proctor and Gamble Co. (P&G)  “reviewing” its relationship with advertising agency BBDO for Gillette’s shaving, deodorant, and body wash business in North America.  That means that other advertising companies will “pitch” their ideas to P&G to possibly take over advertising from BBDO.  The relationship between Gillette and BBDO (in various corporate ownership forms for both companies) has lasted for over 80 years, according to advertising industry news periodical Ad Age. I admit it, I’m not a big fan of vintage razors.  I will grant you that for the most part they’re built very well and there are tons of them still around, easily found in internet auction sites, antique stores, and grand parent’s bathrooms.  But–speaking for myself–there are just too many unknowns about the true mechanical condition of a vintage razor for me to be confortable with recommending them to someone just getting into traditional shaving with a DE.

That said, I think there are two models of vintage DE razors that deserve at least a little love from me for the beginner: the Gillette SuperSpeed’s manufactured from the late 1940’s through the mid 1950’s, and the Shick Krona.

3 Face Cooling Aftershave Balms

Cool It Down!

After the recent post on face freezing shaving creams and soaps I decided to turn my attention to cooling aftershave balms as well.  A cooling aftershave splash is easy–throw in enough alcohol and you’ll get the cold kick.  Of course these products–the AV’s, the Osage’s, the ‘Spices–all caution not to use it around open flame!  Getting a cooling effect out of a heavier “balm” product is a little trickier.  Here are three “mainstream” products (Artisan products?  That’s another post): [Read more…]

Gillette's Plan For Dominating The World: P&G, Reverse Innovation, And The Gillette Guard

The Gillette Guard

The Harvard Review had a recent article on how Proctor & Gamble’s Gillette division used “reverse innovation” to bring a new, inexpensive razor to India–the Gillette Guard.  You can read the whole thing at the link but let me summarize: [Read more…]
