Art of Shaving Changing Their Shaving Soap Formula?

The shaving forums (here for example) are all abuzz that The Art of Shaving’s excellent shaving soap is apparently in the process of changing from a tallow-based formula to one based on palm oil.  I’m frankly surprised its taken this long for Proctor and Gamble’s accountants to make themselves known, but there you have it.  I’ll have to try the new formula soon and report back.  Trumper’s tried doing something similar with their Eucris shave soap and while the results are acceptable it is not nearly as luxurious as their tallow soaps.  Stay tuned….

Meanwhile, if you want to see if you can get a puck of the old stuff, Art of Shaving is having a “Friends and Family” sale this weekend at their stores (be sure to look at the ingredient list so you know what you’re getting: the original formula will list sodium tallowate). The sale will probably be online as well–it’s worth looking at their website this weekend to see though of course there’s no way of telling whether you will get the old formula or the new).

Sharpologist's Shaving Brush Buyer's Guide Updated! Over 430 Shaving Brushes Listed

I have updated my “Shaving Brush Buyer’s Guide.”  Several new vendors have been added to the list of shaving brushes currently on the market (notably Thater and eShave) and some other corrections have been made.  I have created a separate page for the buyer’s guide with helpful video, text and links.  Still, understand that while periodic updated will continue to be made, this list is not exhaustive and probably never can be: I don’t think I’ll be able to keep up with every brush and manufacturer out there.  Here is the list in “CSV” format for importing into your favorite spreadsheet or database program:

Art of Shaving Reformulation

Comparisons?

Art of Shaving has apparently reformulated their shaving creams.  I just picked up a tube of Lavender and compared it to the one that I have almost finished.  It looks like they “tweaked” the recipe to me: the new one takes me a bit longer to lather (that might be seasonal though–it is getting dryer around here with Winter coming) but otherwise “feels” about the same to me.

New: Aqua (Water), Stearic Acid, Myristic Acid, Pottasium Hidroxide, Glycerin,Coconut Acid, Lavandula Angustifolia (lavender oil), Triethalonamine, Sodium Hydroxide, Palmitic Acid, Methylparaben, Lauric Acid, Prophylparaben, Diethalomamine.

Old: Water, Stearic Acid, Myristic Acid, Potassium Hydroxide, Coconut Acid, Glycerin, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Triethonolamine, Sodium Hydroxide, Methylparaben, Proplylparaben.

Interestingly, the new version still has parabens.  The shave soaps don’t appear to have been changed.  Has anyone else been able to compare new vs. old?

On a related note, AOS has come up with a new scent, “Ocean Kelp.”  Anyone tried it yet?
