My New Year's Resolutions Update

Listen to this article

At the beginning of the year I made three New Year’s resolutions about shaving.  Here is an update.

The Resolutions

Resolution #1: “Get really good at straight razor shaving.”  I’m shaving with a straight much more often now–several times a week–and I have purchased more straight razors and strops to try.  I now have:

  • a no-name vintage;
  • an inexpensive Dovo;
  • a Gold Dollar;
  • a very good Grim;
  • and an excellent Hart Steel.

I also have a Japanese-style straight (“Kamisori”), but that’s another post.  🙂  Performance-wise, the large, heavy Hart Steel razor shaves most effortlessly, though its size makes it the most difficult to use in tight areas.  The Grim is my second favorite, shaving almost as well as the Hart (and it is easier to maneuver).  The Gold Dollar and the Dovo shave about the same but they’re just not in the same league as the others.  The no-name vintage brings up the rear: the build quality is good but it’s too small and light for my taste.  But I am doing my best to get good at using all these razors.
Resolution #2: “Make a shaving video at least every other week.”  I’ve really fallen down on this one, unfortunately.  Some temporary health issues (I was on flat on my back in bed for a week with the flu) and getting ready for a life-changing event (see Resolution #3!) have kept me busy.  Hopefully I will be able to tackle this in the near future because….
Resolution #3: “Make Sharpologist and shaving/grooming advocacy my full-time job.” I’ve taken a deep breath and announced my retirement intentions from my “9-5 day job!”  Beginning at the end of March I will be making Sharpologist my full-time gig!  Look for new features in the coming months….

  1. Congratulations on the accomplishments! I also hope to turn my sample shop into my permanent full time job and quit my 9 – 5 in the next 3 to 5 years. Thanks for all you do and for the motivation! Garry

  2. Awesome! I really appreciated your initial set of videos. They really encouraged and sold me on DE shaving. No more expensive cartridges ever again!
