Strop Shoppe Shave Soaps

Strop Shoppe

I recently tried some shaving soaps from the Strop Shoppe.  I love their motto: “Shaving Shouldn’t Suck.”  In a fairly crowded “artisan” shaving product area, they are trying to distinguish themselves by using as few ingredients as possible, limiting themselves to Stearic Acid, Glycerin, Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, Rice Bran Oil (rice bran oil? That’s a new one on me), Potassium Hydroxide, Sodium Hydroxide, and various essential oils. For a relatively modest investment you can try a selection of their scents.  I recently got a couple of of their sample sets, which come in a nice wooden box.  Their “herbal” scents include lemon eucalyptus, margarita lime, pomegranate, and coconut lime verbina.  Their “popular scent” pack includes “Black Tie,”  bay rum, “Baker Street,” and peppermint.  I wish I was better at describing scents: Black Tie and Baker Street are very “cologne-like” to me but I can’t really break it down for you.  I like them though.  I’ve been making my way through the packs and they have performed very well for me.  Because I have hard water they seem to take a little longer to build a lather, probably because of the lack of additional saponification ingredients, but when it does come together it works very well.

A couple additional items that came to my attention just before posting this:

  • A tallow-based shave soap is in development.  It will be produced using separate utensils from the vegetable base, so as to not contaminate the vegetable only products with animal products.  It may be available in the next month or so, after confirmation from testers that they like the product.
  • In the near future samples will be offered through Whipped Dog, purchasable on their website.
