Van Der Hagen At Target (US)?

Listen to this article

Van Der Hagen's "Luxury" Shave Set

I’ve seen rumblings on the shave forums that the Van Der Hagen “Luxury” shave products, previously only available on Amazon, have been sighted at some Target stores in the US.  Others have not seen it (there are two stores in my area and they’re certainly not there!).  I contacted Van Der Hagen and Marty Van Der Hagen himself said:
“We are currently in 523 of the larger Target stores. We are hoping to expand beyond that number throughout the year – depending on sales of course! Walgreens has also informed us that they plan on placing the line in ~700 of their “urban stores” this summer….  [W]e just shipped product to the Duane Reade Drug chain which has approx. 200 stores (also owned by Walgreens).”
So there you have it.  There are about 1700 Target stores so VDH is in about one-third of them.  I have to wonder whether there is some buyer at Target who is a traditional wet shaver: back in 2006-2007 Target carried Proraso products for a time.
Have you spotted the new Van Der Hagen products locally?  Leave a comment!
ADDENDUM: there is a little confusion about the brush that’s available.  The Luxury “kit” contains a boar brush (albeit a decent one from the reports) but Target is also selling the VDH Luxury badger brush as well, separately.

  1. Their brush does shed a lot, but I find it works nicely with their deluxe soap which is my favorite shave soap atm. It’s cheap and it does a fantastic job

  2. My wife just picked me up some Van der Hagen Luxury shave soap at Wal Mart. First time I tried it and I like it.

  3. I HAPPEN TO WORK AT TARGET AND SAW THESE TODAY. I QUICKLY PICKED UP TWO.( ONE FOR MY DADDY, AND ONE FOR MY UNCLE. ) I WAS VERY EXCITED TO SEE THE SETS THERE. I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST FOR CHRISTMAS, SO I AM VERY EXCITED TO HEAR THAT WE WILL NOW BE CARRYING THESE. I LIVE IN SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS. I FOUND THEM IN A GIFT SHIPPER IN THE MENS CLOTHING DEPARTMENT. HOPE YOU FIND THEM SOON!!

  5. The Target on Woodruff Rd. in Greenville, SC is carrying this along with the luxury soap refill. Spotted them earlier today.

  6. Bought the luxury shave soap (scented) and two badger brushes at the Target Store in Dayton, Ohio (Sugarcreek store) last week. I have two good silver tip badger brushes. Keeping the Van Der Hagen brushes as a backup or for travel (my shaving equipment seems to come up missing in air travel). I use shave creams. I usually shave in the shower, but today I shaved at the sink. Had a hard time getting the luxury soap to lather and stay wet. Soap seemed to dry quickly on the face. I had to keep adding water all the time. Face seemed dry afterwards. Same thing happened a couple of years when I used their other shaving soaps. Will shave in the shower tomorrow to see if the lather holds up better.

  7. Picked up the luxury set at Target @ the Largo mall location in Largo, FL (mind blowing!). For a beginner I like it much more than the Goo in a can. I’m hoping to get a DE safety razor soon, I don’t grow too much facial hair, but anything has got to be better than disposables.

  8. Van Der Hagen luxury shaving products available at the Target at Chippewa St & Hampton St in South City St. Louis, MO. They had the set, as well as the scented and unscented soap in stock.

  9. I picked up a couple of pucks of the scented soap at a Target near Nashville TN last weekend. They also had the badger brush and the brush, soap, mug package. So far, no complaints with the soap.

  10. I ordered a puck of the luxury scented from a vendor a few months ago, and to be honest I didn’t really care for it at all. I think the regular glycerin and deluxe are better.

  11. I tried the “Luxury Set”, the Badger brush constantly loses the bristles. I loved the cup though. I mean I really like the cup a lot… I am not a big fan of shaving soaps as I prefer creams but found the fragrance to be nice but the soap itself wasn’t anything to write home about.

  12. It is not surprising to see the soaps and brushes at Target. Even cartridge shavers are beginning to realize there is something better than goo-in-the-can. Add all of them to the guys who have switched completely to traditional wetshaving and you have quite a large market.

  13. For the money, the VDH badger brush has become a go-to in my stable. It’s a little floppy but a great performer (better than the Tweezerman brush) but can hold plenty of lather.
Having tried the regular VDH soap and Deluxe soap, the luxury soap is very slick and has a cucumbery Polo black type scent. Finding these VDH products at Target was a pleasant surprise.

  14. I’d been using a VDH soap and boar brush with my triple blade disposable before Mantic helped me to see the light.
I did a stock check on the local Target and snagged one of the sets the next day along with the badger brush.
In addition to the brush and shave kit Target carries the VDH scented and unscented luxury soap pucks.

  15. My first shave set was a mix of an old Gillette Tech, VDH Shaving Soap and a cheap boar hair brush. I’ve always liked the VDH soap, it lathers up quite nicely.
Not as luxurious as say, Mitchell’s Wool Fat, but it gets the job done and it smells pretty good to boot.
I have a soft spot for VDH stuff and have been itching to try the luxury line, specifically the soap. Is it any different than their regular line?

  16. It might be worth mentioning that a large variety of Colonel Conk items as well as the VDH kits are available from Target.com for those of us with Target gift cards lying around. Pretty cool!

  17. Watch out, though – the set with the badger brush (that you pictured) is $32 on Amazon. The $20 Target set has the cheapo VDH boar brush.

    1. +1 on the boar brush being included in Target sets – just picked up the set pictured from Target. Text on box is slightly different from picture, stating only ‘brush’ instead of ‘badger brush’ and the photo shows the banded boar brush rather than the darker badger brush. However, it was only $20 rather than $32.

    1. Looks like I’m falling behind in my blog reading! BTW I feel your pain regarding setting up a bathroom “set” for videos. I need to do a video on how to do a shaving video. 🙂

  18. I’ve tried them both (the boar version and the badger version). The soap is pretty good, and the soap bowls are both nice—the badger set (the “luxury” set) has an apothecary bowl (and a pretty nice stand), and the boar set (the “premium”) has a smaller bowl that fits nicely cupped in the palm of the non-dominant hand.
The brushes are adequate, though both are easily surpassed: any of the Omega boar brushes would be better than the “premium” boar brush. The badger brush is very loosely filled—again, an inexpensive badger brush from Frank Shaving or Lijun would be much better.
Still, overall the Van Der Hagen kits are good starters, and the soap, as I say, is good—though those with very hard water may want to try a distilled water shave.

    1. I agree that there are better brushes out there but the advantage here is that its at a “brick and mortar” store so that it’s available to a walk-in customer.
