Aside: Art Of Shaving Reformulation Redux

Listen to this article

I just got a note on Twitter from Art Of Shaving:

“We haven’t changed the formulation of our shaving cream. We just updated our packaging to show the complete list of ingredients.”

  1. Maybe I’m dense; but I believe AOS has reformulated. I have sensitive skin, so I carefully read ingredients. The new AOS has removed parabens and added another preservative, meth…something or other. I haven’t tried the new cream but I did use the new AOS aftershave balm sans parabens. I returned it because it dried my face, although it didn’t sting.

  2. I’m not sure why everyone is attacking AOS, they’re doing nothing different from what the 3Ts are doing over in the UK. If a company wasn’t concerned about profits, they wouldn’t be around for long. Their products aren’t particularly special to me, but I do think their sandalwood scent is one of the best out there. And giving out free starter kits? That’s pretty cool as well…

  3. If they haven’t changed the formula, then why does my current batch not perform as well as the very first tube I got from them?

  4. That makes me think even less of AOS then before. Why were they hiding ingredients for years? If you put arsenic in your shaving cream (I’m not claiming that AOS or anyone else does this), are you allowed to keep it off the ingredient list if it doesn’t reach a certain percentage threshold? Again, I’m not knocking the product. AOS unscented shave cream was a mainstay of my morning routine for years before I picked up DE shaving. I still enjoy what I have left from prior purchases. I agree with Mantic that it is a good cream and compares well in quality and price to the more established creams. I just take issue with their approach, and think they’ve lost their way chasing dollars. And my beef with them arose before I knew they were not being transparent with their labelling. I’d rather pay more money to support an entity that is actually dedicated to the art of shaving than one that is dedicated to maximizing profit margins at the expense of an unwitting (or in this case, apparently deceived) public.

    1. Dr. K-
      I agree with you + 1,000,000!
But, when you say, “I’d rather pay more money to support an entity that is actually dedicated to the art of shaving than one that is dedicated to maximizing profit margins at the expense of an unwitting (or in this case, apparently deceived) public.”-
Who are you referring too? All shaving vendors have adopted this method.

    2. Consumers rely on the list of ingredients. So they are saying that they didn’t actually list the ingredients but just the ones that sound special? I’ve never used any of their products but it’s hard to believe that now that huge corporate America owns them that they are now going to become fully transparent. There must me more to this story. .. … !
